Chris Tselepis’ research interests are in the field of iron metabolism and gastrointestinal cancer, in particular oesophageal adenocarcinoma and colorectal cancer. Utilising several model systems and state-of-the-art technologies including proteomics and metabolomics, his research group has shown that excessive iron can exacerbate carcinogenesis through the modulation of multiple oncogenic signalling pathways. Through Cancer Research UK funding, the group is further exploring the role of haem metabolism in gastrointestinal cancers. In addition, with funding through the World Cancer Research Fund, it is beginning to explore the role of obesity in colorectal cancer, with a particular focus on the effect of adipokines on iron metabolism and ultimately cancer. Dr Tselepis’ goals are directed at iron chelation therapies as a mechanism of preventing gastrointestinal disease and overcoming resistance to chemotherapy.
