Abstract

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a clinical intervention aimed at improving the health and well-being of people with cardiac disease. CR programs combine key components of exercise, education, behavior change, and psychosocial support. An overview of the influence of major psychosocial factors on people's recovery is provided. Despite overwhelming evidence of the effectiveness of CR, uptake and adherence still remains low. A better understanding of both patterns of attendance and predictors of noncompletion and nonattendance are required to inform interventions to increase uptake of CR and maintain or improve the adherence of people with long-term cardiac conditions.
