Abstract
Titanium carbide and sulphide precipitation in Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3Al with up to 0.2wt%C was investigated. The carbide solvus is 1270 degrees C with 0.2C and 1100 degrees C with 0.1C. Cooling rate has a strong effect on the precipitation of carbide during cooling from the solution temperature with fine carbide particles formed evenly in the grains at high cooling rate and semi-continuous coarse carbide particles formed on grain boundaries and subgrain boundaries when cooled slowly. Orthorhombic structured Ti3S precipitates were observed in carbon-doped Ti-153 samples both in ST and STA conditions. The ST and STA conditions under which sulphide precipitation occurs were investigated. The precipitation of titanium sulphide in alloys with such a low sulphur content (<0.001wt%) is attributed to the reduced solubility of sulphur due to carbon saturation.
