Abstract
This article explores how Pierre-Auguste Renoir's and Impressionists' paintings influence the staging and aesthetic of Jean Renoir's cinema. It offers an overview of the influences of Impressionist aesthetics and themes in Renoir's films, such as Partie de Campagne and French Cancan. Here, pictorial references to Pierre-Auguste Renoir's The Swing and Breakfast by the River are investigated together with more general stylistic and thematic correspondences.
