Abstract

The folding of proteins to their active state in the cell, long thought to be a spontaneous process, requires the assistance of other proteins called molecular chaperones. Molecular chaperones also play a role in helping proteins move across membranes, an essential process in cell growth and function. The article looks at the remarkable role of molecular chaperones.
