Abstract

This paper provides an introduction to HF communications in general, including propagation aspects, and the limitations of traditional HF radio systems. It then explores the significant improvements in capability and performance that the exploitation of modern technology has made possible. Antennas are mentioned in particular. The impact of advanced automated HF communications management (AHFCM) systems, and high performance data modems on aircraft HF communications are highlighted. The specific challenge of providing good aircraft HF radio systems is also discussed.
