N2 - This chapter addresses the process of translation within the ecosystem of the EU institutions and examines how it represents a propitious site for contact-induced language change. It explores the unique nature of the institutional space within which the translation of legal texts is carried out, demonstrating the relevance of the linguistic phenomenon of contact-induced language change in this case. This chapter argues that the dynamics of the EU translation process provide an opportunity for intense, long-term language contact, thus laying the foundations for potential language change to occur. After setting out the theoretical framework (Teich 2003; House 2006; Johanson 1993), this chapter then provides an insight into the practical implications of contact-induced language change within the EU environment, offering examples to show the significant scope of its effect. The research presented in this chapter therefore combines scholarship on EU translation with studies on language contact to establish the linguistic effects of translation practices within a specific institutional ecosystem.
