Abstract
This article explores the relationship between Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Expressionist painting. More precisely, the analysis focuses on the direct reference of pictorial works, including The Red Tower in Halle, Two Women in the Street and Five Women in the Street, in the filmic staging and configuration. In addition, broader thematic, aesthetic, and iconographic elements are also considered in order to show how Expressionist Kirchner and Murnau share a distortive style aimed to convey a comparable struggle of the ordinary person in modern society.
