Abstract
Adaptations of the work of Honoré de Balzac continue to proliferate in a variety of media. However, adaptive interest in Balzac’s fiction is by no means new. This introduction launches the argument that Balzac was himself an adaptive writer. It also considers the way in which theoretical models such as intermediality can help to enrich our understanding of Balzac, and of adaptation as an artistic practice.
