Abstract
The first two canti of Purgatorio appear to play a common introductory role, both performing a clear proemial function. A particular focus is given to the various signals pointing at the presence of music in its statutory definition of musica mundana, humana and instrumentalis, aiming to clarify, in the concepts of allusion, drama, performativity, some of the interpretive categories essential to a fuller appreciation of the function of music in this prelude, and in the whole cantica.
