Abstract
This volume covers a distinct historical era related to British theatre companies operating in this era. The opening chapter provides a contextual political and cultural background to the period in which the companies operated. The second chapter discusses the many types of companies operating in this area. Both
chapters cover the period when cuts under Margaret Thatcher's government changed the landscape for British theatre. Yet it also saw an expansion of companies that made feminism and gender central to their work, and the establishment of new black and Asian companies. Both
chapters draw extensively on the Arts Council of Great Britain archive.
