Abstract
The purpose of study was to understand the socio-cultural-economic landscape and value chain for biogas as an energy/fuel source, its drivers/barriers, etc. in the Himalayan context of Uttarakhand and then suggest the way forward towards their successful deployment/adoption/sustained use. The key objectives of the study were:
1. To conduct a feasibility assessment of biogas-use in Uttarakhand across altitudinal gradient.
2. Explore opportunities, threats and gaps in biogas energy usage based on socio-economic, environmental, and cultural parameters.
3. Suggest a scale-up strategy for biogas solutions based on a sustainable financial model, aligning existing policy benefits.
The study area covered five districts including three districts from Kumaon (Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh) and two districts from Garhwal (Uttarkashi and Rudraprayag). We surveyed biogas users (N=94) in 42 villages spread across 13 blocks. In addition, 150 non-users were surveyed in Almora and Nainital districts covering 27 villages for understanding the market potential and preferences for developing the business model. The project was financially supported by Sustain Plus Energy Foundation, Bangalore.
