Abstract

The energy consumption of urban railway system is increasing dramatically, due to the growing daily travel demand. This situation also brings more challenges to urban railway system operation stability. Thus, based on the existing traction substation, this research proposes a control strategy for urban railway system with energy storage system and renewable energy source, to reduce the power grid energy consumption and improve the railway system operation stability. First, the detailed equivalent model of train vehicle, railway system, and energy storage system is established. Then, a control strategy is designed aiming at reducing the substation peak power and voltage fluctuation. The case study is conducted based on Merseyrail line of Liverpool, with multi-train operation. The simulation result illustrates that the proposed method can efficiently reduce the substation peak power and voltage fluctuation.
