Abstract
The aim of this study was to test if external factors; namely; firm size; manufacturing classification; positional tier can be used to distinguish lean and agile manufacturing organisations. Results were obtained from 140 automotive manufacturing organisations via a constructed survey. Results revealed partial differences between firm size and manufacturing classification when separating lean/agile firms. However, the main contribution involves highlighting the importance of positional tier within a supply chain, as lean firms were significantly operating within the top tiers of the automotive supply chain, whereas agile firms were significantly operating within the lower tiers of the automotive supply chain
