Abstract

We review the literature on the relationship between foreign direct investment
(FDI) and the environment in an Asian context. After a brief discussion of the rel-
evant theoretical literature, survey articles and meta analyses, we discuss two main
strands of the literature (1) the impact of environmental regulations on the desti-
nation of FDI and (2) the environmental impact of FDI. We make the distinction
between FDI inflows to and outflows from Asia and the environmental regulations
and impacts in home and host countries. Finally, we discuss the recent literature
on climate change mitigation through FDI and conclude with suggestions for policy
and future research.
