PhD projects

I am currently supervising multiple audio-visual PhD students working across a range of subjects and methodologies, as well as co-supervising several students writing PhDs in the fields of Film and Television Studies..

I am interested in working with students interested in film production; documentary; digital media; audio-visual academia; digital humanities, social action filmmaking; video essays. I am particularly interested in approaches which push against the boundaries of documentary, video essay and essay film.

Personal profile

Biography

I did my first degree (in American Studies) and both my MPhil and PhD at University of Birmingham, undertaking the latter part-time in order to continue to work as a freelance filmmaker and digital content producer (across a range of genres - sports, comedy, drama, current affairs), as well as other roles across the culture sector (arts centres, museums, TV development), before taking up a permanent lecturing position in 2013. This diverse experience and skillset underpin my pedagogy and practice: critical, creative, collaborative, with an emphasis on ethics and employability.

I am interested in all forms of practice-based research, but with a particular emphasis on the audio-visual - documentaries, video essays, essay films, film-poems, and abstract/concept work.

Twitter: https://twitter.com/SecondsZen/

During the 202 UK lockdown, I began filming short nature films, tagged as 30 seconds of zen. I found the practice of filming them - staying still and quiet, holding a moment in order to 'hold' a moment on-screen - beneficial to my mental health. I continue to produce such films and share them via this Twitter page.
