My current research aims to address the lack of visibility of women translators within the study of translation history. Through a discussion of the lives and works of forgotten women translators within the context of early nineteenth-century France, I aim to demonstrate the ways in which the study of marginalised individuals enriches our understanding of translation theories and practices throughout history.  In order to support my hypotheses that women were engaging with translation in significant and meaningful ways during this period, and that translation presented women with the opportunity to expand the boundaries of the domestic sphere, I will be exploring the following questions:

• Why were women translating?
• In what ways were women translators collaborating with other translators and authors?
• How did the approaches of women translators correspond with the dominant translation theories of the time?
• How were women translators and their translations received by contemporaries?
