Abstract

The expanded and published version of the 16th Annual Virginia Woolf Birthday Lecture. Examines Woolf's winter images and associations, including her ideas about historical winters having different aesthetics from modern winters, her reading of Renaissance writers on winter - especially Thomas Sackville - and her own winter experiences, for example as an atheist at Christmas.
