Abstract
This chapter considers the development of risk assessment methodologies such as structured guided assessments and actuarial measures used in the assessment of sexual and violent offenders. In relation to assessing risk in sexual offenders, measures of sexual deviance (pre-occupation/obsessions with sex), intimacy deficits and affect dysregulation have consistently identified sexual recidivists. Sexual (deviant) interest continues to be one of the strongest predictors of sexual recidivism. In contrast, for violent offenders the expression of antisocial attitudes, values and beliefs; rule violation; poor insight into offending; impulsivity; and substance misuse risk factors have repeatedly identified the violent recidivist.
