Abstract

This article claims that the forest of Ravenna, the city that was "last refuge" in Dante's exile, is the actual poetic setting for the construction of the Earthly Paradise in Dante's Comedy. The inclusion of suggestions lent by the musical and visual arts plays here a fundamental and programmatic role. This article distinguishes and elaborates on the the functions interpreted as "descriptive", "narrative", "allusive", "performative", "cognitive", and "anagogic".
