N2 - Vibro-stone columns are a common form of ground improvement that typically utilizes primary aggregates but in recent years due to sustainable practice, recycled aggregates have been used as an alternative. Current waste management regulations in the United Kingdom (UK) do not allow the easy use of waste in the production of recycled aggregates. Conversely, the introduction of new European Aggregate Standards in 2004 now does not discriminate against recycled aggregates that can demonstrate 'full recovery'. A consistent limitation of the utilization of secondary aggregates is restricted availability due to isolated geographical production that incurs excessive haulage costs. By comparison recycled aggregates can be sourced easily and so are a viable alternative aggregate for use in vibro-stone columns. Copyright ASCE 2008.
