Abstract

This study critically engages with the work of Yale historian of Judaism Prof. Steven Fraade in a volume dedicated to his honour. In particular Fraade’s keen methodological insights on the often oversimplified presentation of the relationship of ancient Jewish texts to historical reality are here applied to challenge some persistent readings - even in Fraade’s own work on that text - of the Community Rule.
