The measurement of train aerodynamic phenomena in operational conditions

Abstract

This paper describes the ongoing project "The measurement of train aerodynamic phenomena in operational conditions", which aims to compare experimental and numerical measurements of train aerodynamic phenomena with full scale on-train and trackside measurements. The project utilises the GB New Measurement Train - a 200kph Class 43 unit. Preliminary results are reported for two sets of full scale experiments being carried out on and around the train - slipstream and pressure measurements at a trackside site, cross wind and tunnel passing pressures on the train, wind tunnel and moving model rig measurements of train slipstreams and cross wind behaviour, and CFD calculations of a range of aerodynamic phenomena. Future work on the project is outlined.
