Abstract

Superstate defines an organizing political-administrative entity constituted from multiple states that possesses substantive or total authority over these states. The term emerged in the early twentieth century in political geography and in popular literature. Existing geographical theories of superstate are poorly defined, with a lack of clarity over how they might be created and sustained. Fresh perspectives on understanding superstates could build upon related work in political geography on neo-imperialism and the reemergence of empire and world states as a focus of study in political science to develop greater cross-disciplinary engagement on this concept.
