Abstract

The article clears up a major historiographical misunderstanding around the first Arab siege of Constantinople: rather than in 674-8, the first Arab attempt to conquer the Roman capital took place in 667-9 and was led by the son of the reigning caliph. This has serious implications for our understanding of the Arab expansion, the Byzantine reaction to it, and of the history of the 7th century in general. The article summarizes and updates the results presented more fully in "Travaux et Memoires" 19 (2015)
