Abstract
The effect of die coating surface roughness and thermal conductivity on the fluidity of commercial purity Al has been examined. Comparisons were made between two insulating coatings of similar thermal conductivity, but different surface roughness, and between an insulating die coating and a graphitic coating of different thermal conductivity but similar surface roughness. The results showed that fluidity was slightly influenced by die coating composition and hence thermal conductivity, but more strongly influenced by coating surface roughness, with a rougher coating associated with greater fluidity. These results were interpreted by consideration of the nature of the interfacial heat transfer between the casting and the die coating during filling of the mould.
