Abstract

In this chapter, we will focus on cytokine-based therapeutics. Not only are developments in the identification and targeting of cytokines vital, but the detailed pharmacology of the therapeutics themselves is of critical importance. The proof of concept demonstrated by the success of anti- tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents, combined with the experimental ease with which cytokines can be investigated and manipulated, has opened the future of rheumatology to exciting new conceptual and therapeutic prospects.
