Abstract

The Spectator had a nearly unprecedented influence on the social and literary culture of the British Isles, but the material forms which mediated this influence have seldom been examined. This essay accompanies a catalogue of editions of the complete Spectator printed in the British Isles during the first hundred years of its life (up to 1812) .
