Abstract

We report further on an investigation of magnetic vortex lattice (VL) structures in a single crystal of pure niobium with the magnetic field applied along a fourfold symmetry axis. New VL structures are observed, all of which spontaneously break some crystal symmetry. This symmetry-breaking causes multiple degenerate VL domains to exist within the sample. Through small rotations of the sample away from the fourfold axis, we can lift the degeneracy and associate diffraction spots with VL domains. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
