Abstract

The purpose of the present chapter is to discuss research on self-regulated learning and performance in sport settings. Using the social cognitive perspective of self-regulation in athletes, we review research on self-regulated learning and processes in sport. Specifically, we discuss research on the effectiveness of key self-regulatory processes across Zimmerman’s (2000) three-phase cyclical model of self-regulation including, forethought, performance and self-reflection on learning and performance. We also review research on the role that the coach plays on athletes’ self-regulatory functioning with a particular focus on motivational climate. Finally, we conclude by providing directions for future research and illustrating self-regulated learning in training and competition contexts.
