Abstract
I have argued elsewhere that the presence of this sort of imagery within the post-reformation household should be understood as an attempt to refocus attention on spiritual endeavour during the routines of domestic life. Protestant commentaries authorised the depiction of ‘stories’ or ‘histories’ in private houses as long as the image adhered to the scriptural account.
