Abstract

A contribution to a genuinely ground-breaking literary history of Europe from the onset of the Black Death until the end of the Council of Constance, which is organized geographically, on the basis of a linked sequence of 82 places. My Salzburg chapter is the first to cover that city's late-medieval literary history in English, and the first to draw explicit links between the city's political and ecclesiastical infrastructure and its cultural productivity. The bulk of the chapter is devoted to the work of the important and innovative poet known as Der Moench von Salzburg, about whom nothing of any length has been published before in a language other than German.

This chapter is the first survey in English of the literary history of Salzburg in this period, and the first which discusses the works produced specifically in the context of the socio-poltical background.
