Abstract
This article offers the first systematic archaeological study of mosaic iconoclasm initiated during the Umayyad period across a number of church buildings in the former Byzantine provinces of Palaestina and Arabia. It argues for a more contextual reading of mosaic iconoclasm with respect to its architectural setting and the impact of patron economies on the iconoclast landscape that is now visible to archaeologists. Finally, it argues that Palestinian iconoclasm is best understood as an internal debate with the Chalcedonian community of Palestine, and one intended to reinforce the primacy of the sacred Christian image.
