Abstract

The behavior of tantalum subjected to one dimensional loading is well documented. However, little work has been performed on the effect of a lateral release wave on the microstructure of tantalum. In the past, it has generally been assumed that the effect of the radial stress release wave is of secondary importance or could be neglected. In this paper, a tantalum single crystal was subjected to a 6-GPa plate impact experiment with lateral release. This generates profuse twins in the specimen. The distribution and type of the twins were studied and the origin of the twinning is discussed.
