Abstract
Atherosclerosis, which begins early in life, is a disease that subsequently leads to cardiovascular disease (CVD) including coronary heart disease (CHD) and peripheral and cerebrovascular disease. CVD is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. According to the World Health Organisation, 17.3 million individuals died of CVD in 2008, and it is estimated that within the next 15 years, nearly 30 million lives will be lost to CVD (World Health Organisation 2011). Various factors such as lifestyle, smoking, alcohol, family history of CVD, environment, and diet have been suggested to be among the contributors of CVD. Diet is a major modifiable risk factor for the development of CVD.
