Marangoni phenomena during droplet formation in microfluidics

Abstract

The impact of Marangoni phenomena during droplet formation was investigated experimentally. We demonstrated that when the deformation time-scale is similar to the adsorption time-scale of the surfactant the velocities along the interface of the thinning neck appear to smaller compared to a model system, suggesting, the presence of Marangoni stresses acting against the process. Furthermore, the Marangoni phenomena present appear to increase droplet sizes and droplet detachment time scales verifying that they act against droplet break-up. Lastly, we completely resolved the velocity field for the necking stage.
