Abstract

In this work, a novel type of metamaterial structure is proposed in microstrip planar technology. It consists in the combination of an Electromagnetic Bandgap (EBG) structure (which behaves in an analogous manner as a medium with a negative value of ε) and an array of Split Ring Resonators (SRR), which exhibit a negative value of μ, in the vicinity of the quasi-static resonance frequency. The simultaneous behaviour of both structures gives rise to a left-handed structure in a fully planar fashion. Full wave simulation results as well as measurement from initial fabricated prototypes confirm initial theoretical assumptions, leading to a new way of obtaining a planar LHM. Such a structure could lead to the implementation of enhanced devices, such as filters and couplers.
