Abstract

Five monuments of individual Kushites, datable to the Twenty-fifth Dynasty and either excavated at, or attributable to, Abydos, are presented here. Those commemorated include a king’s son, Ptahmaakheru, and a man of high but unspecified status called Abana, as well as a courtier, Irkenytj, and two men without title, Karkaskash and Panehsy. Identification of ethnic identity is based on names in most cases, but on costume and other considerations in the case of Ptahmaakheru. The fact that all are masculine shows that it was not only female members of the Kushite royal family who were interred at Abydos.
