This paper examines the development of the study of the 'end of Roman Britain', in particular since the nineteen-seventies when the subject-area became a definite topic of study. It examines some of the differing intellectual traditions which developed and the ways in which they reacted against existing paradigms. The state of the sub-discipline in the early twenty-first century is contrasted with the situation some forty and more years ago.
