Hypermedia generation from domain representations

Abstract

Hypertext and hypermedia systems are potentially very powerful tools for education and training. There are, however, very serious problems involved in producing high quality hypermedia documents. This is of particular concern for educational applications where ease of use and clarity should be paramount. This paper discusses a tool (Snapper) which allows the hypermedia author to construct network based domain representations. From this representation a number of different hypermedia systems can be generated. The advantages of this approach include easier, more effective and lower cost authoring, higher quality results, documents which are more appropriate to their users and also lower maintenance costs. This paper expands upon the rationale for this approach, describes the system built and suggests further areas of work.
