Abstract
This paper reviews the literature which identifies the physiological effects of immersion on vital capacity and associated respiratory volumes and mechanics. The apparent conflict as to whether immersion is detrimental or beneficial for individuals with small lung volumes is identified. A critical analysis of previous research is made, the implications for clinical practice are identified, and suggestions for future research are given.
