Abstract

Recent progress in this area, stimulated by application to the cuprate superconductors, will be reviewed. In particular the following issues will be addressed: (1) Local induced paramagnetism versus ferromagnetism. (2) Dependence of the nature of the local magnetic distortion on the momentum of the hole. (3) Comparison of the spin-1/2 case with the classical limit (motivated by La2NiO4 and La2CoO4).
