Abstract

The field of applied sport psychology has enjoyed continuous growth since the early 1970s. Increasingly, sport psychologists are being asked, by athletes and coaches alike, to render a variety of professional services, including advice on stress management, motivation, team and athlete/coach communication and athlete selection and counselling.
Although the future of applied sport psychology looks bright, there are several concerns which must be addressed before this field can begin to have its greatest impact. This article discusses three professional needs:
- For careful study and evaluation in the new field of sport psychology
- For sport psychologists to broaden their applied work and research to a variety of physical settings and participants
- For coaches and sport psychologists to keep a sense of responsibility in all psychological interventions
