Exploring a successful single case study in mentoring - an initiative for council employees to become mentors for Children in Care

The Mission Mentoring Programme is an innovative mentoring scheme which supports council employees to become mentors for children in care. The scheme was first piloted in 2015, proved successful with rewarding outcomes, and has continued to grow and attract further interest from other employees. This article presents a single case study of a young person who took part in the programme and found it a helpful and supportive scheme. It includes his views, the views of his mentor, and the views of the Virtual School Headteacher (VSH) who established the programme. The article begins with a review of the literature on mentoring interventions and offers background on the Mission Mentoring Programme. Key themes identified from the case study highlight a potential way of developing the corporate parenting role, destigmatising and improving outcomes for children in care and the importance of the matching process between mentor and mentee. The article concludes identifying ways to expand the scheme including offering training opportunities to mentors.
