Abstract
The ability to fabricate metallic nanostructures has great potential for applications ranging from electronics to biosensors. The integration of two complementary approaches – top-down lithography and bottom-up self-assembly – have been pursued as a means of realizing such a major task. This review discusses two of these hybrid bottom-up/top-down processes, which have been employed for creating nanometer-scale surface structures of gold nanoparticles in precisely engineered geometries. Particular attention is given to the nanofabrication methodologies and potential applications.
