Enabling climate compatible development in the coastal region of Kenya

Progress towards climate compatible development cannot happen in a vacuum; building on, and learning from, existing policy instruments and management approaches is essential. Coastal areas present a challenging environment for CCD, with multiple, and interacting, ecosystems, uses and users, with many mechanisms and approaches already utilised. A review of common approaches to managing natural resources in the coastal zone identifies key features and lessons from integrated coastal zone management, collaborative management, protected areas designation and environmental impact assessment. In addition, the emerging application of Payment for Ecosystem Services is considered. Lessons are then identified from experience of Kenya.
