Abstract
The electronic structure of superconducting cuprates containing sulfur and phosphorus oxyanions has been studied by means of x-ray emission spectroscopy, and it has been found that the S and P atoms exhibit their highest oxidation states in these materials. Results of self-consistent full-potential linear-muffin-tin-orbital band-structure calculations based on an idealized structural model for S-doped cuprate are also presented. These suggest that the incorporation of SO4 groups may be accompanied by a charge redistribution involving both anion and cation sublattices.
