Effects of the feeding structure on low-THz bull's eye antennas

Abstract

We present a study on novel feeding mechanisms for two-dimensional (Bull's Eye) corrugated ground-plane antennas operating at 300 GHz. For the first time, a tapered aperture is employed as the excitation mechanism, instead of the typical subwavelength slot. Our prototype includes 11 periodic corrugated rings on an aluminum plate and is of very low profile and compact lateral size. This antenna exhibits a simulated realized gain of 22 dBi and a 3-dB gain bandwidth of 4.43%. The new tapered aperture provides a very good and broadband input matching, compared to the Bull's Eye realizations with the resonant slot aperture.
