Abstract

Pregnant women fasting in Ramadan is sometimes an emotive and controversial subject for Muslims. It would appear that most health care professionals advise against fasting during pregnancy. There is research on the subject however much is not new, some appears to be methodologically flawed and much appears to be restricted to the issue of the effect of fasting on birth weight. There are large gaps in knowledge and more current research is needed. However in the light of available research, Ramadan fasting has no long term effects on normal healthy mothers or their full term offspring.
