Abstract

The effect of a range of carbon additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the beta titanium alloy Ti-15-3 (Ti-15V-3Al-3Sn-3Cr) (wt-%) has been studied. It has been found that the strength is improved by about 16% and the ductility of Ti-15-3 is maintained at about the same level when 0.2% carbon was added. The carbides refine the alpha phase, inhibit the growth of the alpha phase, accelerate the precipitation of alpha and in aged samples, reduce the formation of grain boundary alpha phase. These observations are discussed in terms of the role of Ti2C in gettering oxygen from the beta matrix and thus influencing alpha phase precipitation and the mechanical properties.
